Window dressing - key looks for Autumn / Winter 2007 By:
Sparkling windows and stylish window dressings such as blinds and shutters can set the tone for the rest of your home. As the shops fill up with the new season's latest fashions, Sarah Quilliam, head of product design at Hillarys, the UK's largest supplier of made to measure blinds and shutters, gives us a heads up on what the best dressed windows will be wearing this season. “Bold, striking schemes continue to be a key trend for autumn and winter,” says Sarah, “from the high contrast of black and white to the luxury and glamour of metallics and shiny fabrics through to racy russets and regal purples inspired by the vibrant shades of autumn.” “A well kept secret in interior design circles is that you should always aim to introduce a shot of black into a room to sharpen it up and give some definition,” she continues. “White and black is a high impact, arresting combination and one that we'll see a lot of this season both on the catwalk and in interiors but it can be a bit stark and minimalist for some people.” “A good way to soften this look is to add in another colour with accessories - red, teal and gold are all set to be big over autumn and winter. This is also quite a simple way to change the look of your room season to season, without spending a fortune.” Add drama to break up a black and white scheme with a bold feature wall in red. With a Bronco Charcoal roman blind the look is striking. Miranda Monochrome roller blinds with a monochrome look for those who like chic simplicity. Two of this season's major trends are brought together when a contemporary black and white scheme is accessorised with a sleek black Venetian blind shot through with sparkly gold. “Metallics and shimmery, shiny fabrics is another big trend that we'll be seeing a lot of both on the high street and in our homes. These looks are reminiscent of the jet-set style of the seventies where glitz ruled and glamour rocked!” And where better to inject a bit of razzamatazz than the bedroom. Gold Venetian blinds look great with dark wood traditional bedroom furniture, giving a lovely warm glow. “And of course it's a great time of year to take inspiration from the awesome hues of Mother Nature's colour palette - ripe berries, warm russets and golds, punchy purple – and bring these gorgeous tones into our homes. They'll really help to give a cosy upbeat feel to any room, whatever the weather.” Mulberry coloured Venetian blinds or shutters mixed with grey is bang on trend this autumn. Lined Roman blinds are a good way to help insulate your windows, whilst adding a strong burst of colour.
