What is the best type of advertising for my business?
By: Dynamic Blue Link

Great! So you‘ve organized your little working corner where you plan to conquer the world. The smell of fresh paint on the walls inspire you, the little pot plant looks great in the corner of your desk, and the shiny new computer awaits your first command. So, on to take the world by storm...

The first thing you should know about the world wide web is that it is an intricate world where the good and the evil live side by side. There are millions of people like you, wanting to start a new business online. And for each one of you, there are a thousand scam-artists. Its a profession, on the web.

When you first begin to explore the different marketing options available to you, it all seems so simple. For $10, one site offers to send 10,000 highly targeted clients to your site. Heard it? Don‘t buy into it.

Let‘s get down and dirty. There is no free meal on the web. Its hard work. You will have to spend long, long hours in front of your shiny new computer to make your ends meet.

There are a few little things I can recommend that can indeed get your business off the ground. But its a vicious cycle. The moment you stop, nobody will find you again.

Join forums
You can join discussion groups who specifically speak of your product. Believe me, there is a group out there for you, regardless of what you sell. In your sig, you can add a link to your site. Be a genuine contributor to the discussion, and be a regular contributor. That will send over the first trickle of visitors to your site.

Spend a little on AdSense
Be prepared to spend a fine sum before anything happens. In AdSense, you have to bid a price in order for your advert to show to web surfers. Be very careful in wording your advert. Be concise. Concentrate on a well-targeted audience. Choose a small number of keywords that are specific. You may only reach a few 100 people with such concise keywords, but at least you won‘t be loosing money on clients who thought your product was something else. And the soundest advice is to keep an eye on your budget.

Write articles
Use your imagination, and get down to writing. Don‘t confuse an article with a press release. A press release is something you write specifically about your product, its price, the promotions you‘re running, etc. Its pure advertising.

An article is more sophisticated. For example, if you sell pet accessories, write an article or two about a rare breed of dog, or tell the story of one of your pets. Put your personality into it. Don‘t sell the product right there. At the end of your article, add the link to your site. If your article is good, the reader will be curious to visit your site. But something much better can happen when you write a good article. Other webmasters will take your article and publish it on their own websites. A good percentage of them will keep your link there. And so, your first backlinks start to show results. If 10 sites link back to you, that‘s 10 sites helping you attract visitors to your product.

Finally, keep your content fresh. Don‘t get lazy on your own site. Write some unique articles for your own site. Run campaigns. Set up a blog. Do what you will. But add something new every day. Search engines will credit you for this by ranking your link higher and higher each time a web surfer searches for your keywords.

So, how come there‘s been no mention of Digg and the likes? Sure, these sites were great, but there‘s been a lot of abuse lately. I have opted to stay away from these sites for a while. Results are not that great anyway.

And how about good old link exchange? Well, the first thing you should not do is to pay to join a link-exchange program that automatically links your site to others. Nothing will come of it. No visitors. No page-rank juice. Link exchanging is extremely important, but it has to be done as the elders did...manually! Its a lot of hours. Its a lot of work. But its the only way.

I believe I‘ve run down the list of basics for your start-up. Your first visitors will begin to trickle over. But from hereon, your advertising budget will have to expand. You will have to write more and more articles. And your content has to continually freshen up. Its hard work alright. So don‘t go ruining it by falling into one of those offers that drive 10,000 targeted visitors to your site for $10.
