Using mace for self-defense By: Roy Allen
Mace is a registered brand name of a non-lethal self-defense spray, manufactured by Mace Security International. Mace, Inc. makes three different formulas of self-defense spray: Triple Action, PepperGard or Pepper Mace, and Pepper Foam. All sprays are meant to be directed into the face of an assailant. The word "mace" is often used interchangeably with "pepper spray." Mace Inc.'s Triple Action product combines pepper spray, tear gas and ultraviolet dye for an all-out assault on any would-be attacker. The pepper spray is made from hot cayenne peppers, the active ingredient being oleoresin capsicum. Pepper spray is an inflammatory agent that causes temporary blindness and difficulty breathing, which can last up to 90 minutes. Tear gas is an irritant that induces coughing, while the dye stains the attacker for later identification. Although Mace is a brand name, many other companies make a pepper spray or sprayable tear gas designed for self-defense. Mace has six physiological effects that your attacker may experience: * Central nervous system: headache, dizziness, and extreme general discomfort * Chest: tight feeling in upper respiratory system, coughing * Eyes: tearing and burning * Mouth: accelerated secretion of saliva * Nose: discharge, burning, irritation * Skin: burning and stinging feeling on surface nerve endings on the face If you plan to use Mace or pepper spray for self-defense, be prepared to use it. Have the canister out and in your hand, with your finger on the trigger. Be aware that Mace does not paralyze. Your attacker may still be able to walk, run, or try to grab you. Once you’ve sprayed your assailant, get out of the area immediately Run in the opposite direction of your attacker if possible. When you are safe, tell your local law enforcement agency about the attack. This is very important because it may help police apprehend the attacker, and prevent attacks on others. The use of tear gas or a tear gas weapon, except in self-defense, can be a felony. You can get up to three years in state prison or up to one year in county jail and a fine of up to $1,000. Investigate before you buy. =============================
