Obtaining an international scholarship

You can of course apply for a national or for an international scholarship, depending on where you plan to study.

With the Internet at hand, it is not extremely difficult to find the scholarship that suits you best. According to your skills and goals you can choose to apply for an academic, for an athletic, or for an institutional grant. Academic scholarships are the most popular as many high school graduates are very interested in them, but also because students who apply for an academic exchange program are in addition looking for an international scholarship at academic level.

In order to get an academic scholarship, national or international, there are several steps that need to be considered. First, if you plan to look for such a scholarship, you should start looking as early as possible because the official procedures take quite a long time and because you will most likely find more scholarships than you can apply for, increasing thus your chances to actually win one. Secondly, you have to make sure that you are eligible for the scholarship you selected. Some international scholarships for example are meant only for students coming from a limited number of countries. The next step is writing a good application form that will answer some specific questions such as the academic institutions where you graduated, your grades, your family’s revenue. Most often you are also required to write an essay explaining why you need the money and the reasons for which you think they should be awarded to you and not to someone else. This is an important part of your application as you need to convince the board that will assess your application that you are the right person to receive that scholarship.

Of course, this whole process might be a bit more challenging when it comes to an international scholarship as you have to consider that, if it is a very well known university such as the Oxford or Cambridge, there will probably be many more candidates applying for the same scholarship as you are. Therefore, you need to make sure you meet the requirements stated in the scholarship offer as well as to have a very personal and persuasive essay.

Alongside academic grants, you can also look for an athletic or for an institutional grant. Athletic grants are mostly popular for high school graduates that want to go to college. The US Institutional grants are usually awarded by companies or organizations that want to offer their support to a number of young students to help them finish their studies. Sometimes, institutions award grants for students that want to study in the same field they are activating in. Therefore, students that are awarded a grant by a company or organization are often also offered a position within the same institution once they graduate. International scholarships can also be awarded by companies or institutions, sometimes from your own country, with the promise that you will return to work for them or for another one of their subsidiaries once you graduate.

To find out more about your chances of obtaining an international scholarship, (except for the Internet) you can also use your own university. For example, many universities in Europe are involved in the European Student Exchange Program Erasmus which allows students from European countries to study for a period of 6 to 12 months in another European university without paying any academic fees. Moreover, they are even granted a monthly sum of money for their personal expenses.

An international scholarship is not only a way of getting to know another academic system, but it is a whole new life experience that allows you to get acquainted to a new culture, a new civilization, a new mentality. Besides, it offers you the opportunity to travel and meet new people that may turn out to be lifetime friends.

Obtaining a national or an international scholarship is not impossible when information is at hand due to the web and its national and international resources. In addition, it saves you a lot of worries related to your financial possibilities during your studies and sometimes it even guarantees you a job after graduation.
