Need Excellent Employees? The Maslow Theory Is Your Guide
By: Daiv Russell

Though the Maslow Needs Hierarchy is apparent in several areas of life, in none of these is it more prevalent than in the business world. With the many and varied stages of life that different people are in, there is a much greater concern about the possibility of conflict in business. While the manager of a department may have achieved the stage of self-actualization and has a family, his/her entry level worker may only be at the cusp of securing their first apartment.

The considerable distinction among employees of unique stages of Maslow‘s hierarchy of needs is most readily shown via the prior example. The stress level of somebody who is only just making do, experiencing anxiety with their physiological as well as security requirements is of significant concern. Somebody experiencing that much tension may well have their job start to worsen.

Conversely, someone who has met these basic needs, with an apartment, family, and enough money to easily get by, will more often than not provide superior work compared to others. It is difficult to focus in the monotony of the daily workday, and having the ability to provide that focus increases efficiency and effectiveness in the workplace.

This is why a wise business owner puts prospective employees through a thorough interviewing process. Through interviews it‘s easy to identify those with stable environments. In Maslow‘s terms, smart supervisors want to recruit employees in the self-actualization and esteem stages. Both of these stages usually take other people into account when working.

Esteem stage employees benefit businesses because their main desire is to gain attention and respect from those around them. They gain this attention and respect by providing quality work and maintaining excellent relationships with other employees. Their competitive drive allows them to excel at their jobs and any kind of workplace competition increases quality performance and workplace cohesion.

Workers present in the self-actualization part of a firm are quite productive. Such workers concentrate more on the job in hand. These workers seem to be calm with good conduct and pretty well sure of their worth and are prepared to face the hardships of life. To add to this, workers don‘t simply stagnate at a particular stage - they may drop back down the ladder. Hence, it‘s advisable to have only those people who are high up enough in the ladder to impart confidence even when they have occasional backslides.

The Maslow pyramid theory is useful in many areas of life, but serves the business world best. Savvy employers realize that having staff who are more focused, more competent, and more efficient ensure ultimate success. This success can be secured by hiring employees who demonstrate the traits enabled by the top tier of Maslow‘s hierarchy.
