NFC East: Close Games and a Lot to Expect By: Ally White
When you analyze what could come up this NFL season the NFC East could easily be the most competitive division in the NFL in 2006, because there is hardly anything to separate all four teams. The most common factor is that all four teams have veteran head coaches who know how to and will do their best to win. We are most likely to see a lot of close games that come down to coaching decisions and in-game adjustments. I don’t have much hope in the once all mighty Philadelphia Eagles if they don’t watch out they could actually finish fourth in the division. Dallas Cowboys, Washington Redskins, and the New York Giants have all been busy this off season upgrading their roster and personnel, while Philadelphia is just trying to get in good physical shape and forget what a disaster 2005 season was for them. The weakest team for me is Philadelphia. They come with a team that is more calmed and with fewer debates than a year ago, I do not see why the Eagles shouldn’t be healthier, have a stronger offense, on the other hand, the lack of new faces could pile up against Andy Reid and his experienced defense. Washington’s strong point we all know is defense and the fact that Joe Gibbs is concentrating on a balanced and powerful offense brings up the mood on the Redskins fans but can quarterback Mark Brunell stand and play well for the whole season at age 36. Even though Cowboy’s Bill Parcells has made sure that he has an excellent young defense and a potentially strong running game the question is if he can handle his wide receiver Terrel Owens and protect his quarterback Drew Bledsoe. The Giants are entering this NFL season with a defense that could raise some eyebrows and a brilliant offense. The only thing that Tom Coughlin has to work on a little bit more is Eli Manning not making the same scary performance that we saw ending the 2005 season. Maybe I just mentioned the quarterbacks, but on this 2006 season the kickers could be the ones giving the wins on the close games that we are expecting for this division.
