My Child’s Eyes Are Red and Swollen!
By: Alfred Oswald

Symptoms of Conjunctivitis
One of the most common symptoms is discomfort or pain in the eye, which may feel like the sensation of having sand in the eye. Many kids have redness of the eye and inner eyelid, swollen eyelids, sensitivity to bright light, and itchiness and tearing. Ask your child if he is having such problems. Conjunctivitis can also cause discharge from the eyes, which may cause the eyelids to stick together when a child awakens in the morning. Do be aware of what your child is going through.

Ear infections can occur in some kids who are diagnosed with bacterial conjunctivitis because similar bacteria can cause both infections.

What to Expect of Your Doctor.
A doctor will usually examine the eye with a magnifier. They may also put some stain on the front of the eye to show up any irregular areas on the cornea. With a herpes simplex infection they will often see a small ulcer (erosion) on the cornea.

Viral Pink Eye Infection
Many ask, what is the main cause of an eye infection? The leading cause of a red eye is virus infection. Viral pink eye symptoms and signs are usually associated with more of a watery discharge, not green or yellow in color, and is frequently associated with viral "cold-like" symptoms. The eyelids may be swollen. Sometimes looking at bright lights is painful. While viral pink eye may not require an antibiotic, those affected should see a doctor, as occasionally this form of pink eye can be associated with infection of the cornea, (the clear portion of the front of the eyeball). This infection must be correctly detected and treated. Viral pink eye is highly contagious. Viral pink eye usually resolves in five to ten days after symptoms appear. However, if it does not resolve by itself, it is best that you consult your doctor.

What Causes Pink Eye Infection?
The bacteria that most commonly cause infectious pink eye are staphylococci, pneumococci, and streptococci. Be careful not to use medication prescribed for someone else, or from an old infection, as these may be inappropriate for your current infection or may have been contaminated from other infections by accidentally touching the medicine bottle to infected areas. When your child relaxes and opens the eyes, the medicine will flow gently into the infected mucous membranes without the need to "force open" the eyes.

Thus, we do urge you to find out more about methods of preventing eye infections from spreading!
