Mexicos 05 Numbers Way Up
By: GroupTravel

Despite an active hurricane season, Mexico posted a record-breaking year for tourism in 2005, with marked increases in international tourism revenue and arrivals outpaced positive global tourism trends in 2005.

According to statistics recently released by Mexicos Tourism Secretariat (Sectur), Mexico received 21.96 million international visitors in 2005, a 6.5 percent increase in comparison to 2004. Revenue generated by international tourists reached a historic high of US$11.80 billion by the close of 2005, 9.7 percent higher than 2004s revenue of US$10.84 billion. In 2003, Mexico’s revenues had totaled US$9.46 billion.

Mexico continues to attract millions of international visitors each year, highlighting the diversity and attractiveness of our tourism offerings, as well as the warmth of our people, said Mexico Tourism Secretary Rodolfo Elizondo. We expect 2006 to be yet another successful year for our tourism industry, with increased growth across all segments and continued efforts to offer tourists the very best Mexico has to offer.

International visitors (excluding border tourism) to Mexico were reported to have spent an average of US$679 per person per visit in 2005, representing a 0.8 percent increase from 2004.

Thanks in part to this increased revenue; the tourism industry’s trade balance posted an impressive US$4.19 billion surplus in 2005, a more than 10.4 percent increase from 2004.

Tourism arrivals via air also posted increases. According to Sectur, 11.3 million international tourists arrived by plane in 2005, marking a 13.1 percent over 2004.

Visitors arriving by cruise ships in 2005 also posted remarkable numbers, with 6.06 million visitors arriving to Mexico by ship, up 2.7 percent from 2004.

Hotel occupancy registered a national average of 57.65 percent, a half percentage point higher than in 2004.

Some 1.82 million people were employed in the tourism sector by the end of 2005, three percent more than in the previous year.
