Is the High Divorce Rate Accelerating Global Warming?
By: James Walsh

The fact is that when couples split and live alone, the resources they use separately are extremely higher than the resources they spent, as a couple.

Survey Report

The electricity consumption of a divorced couple in separate households is found to be 53% higher than the combined use under the same roof. The usage of water was found to increase by 42%, after a couple separated. About 73 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity was used in America in 2005 by divorced couples living in separate households. This value corresponds to a fifth of Britain’s total consumption.

Demand for Housing

The demand for houses has increased because of the rising divorce rates.

The National Academy of Sciences has found that due to the rise in divorce, the demand for houses has increased. So, the number of rooms per household has increased to 95% from 33%. Researchers have also found that extra rooms of average 38.5 m in size are constructed in houses and apartments to face the growing demands of accommodation of divorced couples.

One Person Household

The necessity for Energy, resources, land and household goods such as TV, washing machines, refrigerators and dishwashers have increased to a greater extent in single person households than in married households. The survey report says one person per household consumes the following in excess.

38% products are consumed in excess.

42% packaging is done more.

55% increase in the power consumption.

61% rise in the usage of gas.

1 ½ tons of waste is used in excess per annum which is a ton higher than that used by houses accommodating four or more members.

The Role of Women in Global Warming

Women are also responsible for global warming. Taking consumer’s spending into consideration; the statistics prove that women tend to spend more than men.

Women are responsible for usage of nearly 70% of the resources. If a minimum of 5% of this total percentage has been utilised on sustainable energy, it would have helped to control global warming.

With increasing divorce rates, women tend to spend more on purchasing products rather than men. As a matter of fact, men tend to spend less following a divorce.

Population Rise

The increase in population level is also one of the reasons behind global warming. Divorcing couples tend to remarry and give birth to children with the new spouse, thereby increasing the population. Research says that population rise may lead to starvation as today’s farms are not sufficient to supply food for the increasing population of tomorrow. So, population control methods are being encouraged to keep the population under control and reduce energy utilisation and global warming.

Controlling Divorce Rates

People have lost all tolerance towards their spouses. When they feel the marriage does not work out, they opt for divorce immediately without a second thought. Due to simple divorce laws and the facilities to divorce online, couple tend to divorce even for simple reasons.

The advent of no-fault divorce law has led to an increase in the divorce rate. Under this divorce law, a couple who wants to divorce with mutual consent can do so at their own free will even without a reasonable excuse. This in turn, has changed people’s mentality to opt for divorce even for trivial reasons. Hence, these laws should be made tougher to reduce unnecessary divorces, which can indirectly help in reducing global warming.

The Last Word

Divorce not only affects the couple and their children, but leads to the destruction of our environment through global warming as well. The environment is affected by the increase in population and the excessive utilisation of resources such as electricity, water, consumer products. This has in turn contributed to an increase in the production of environmentally dangerous waste products.

Although, global warming is caused due to a variety of reasons, it can considerably be reduced to a great extent by reducing the divorce rates. This can only be achieved by voluntary initiatives taken by the divorcing couple. So, when couples decide to divorce, they need to consider both individual consequences and environmental ramifications. In short, couples will have to think twice before divorcing in order to help reduce global warming,.
