How The Winter Months Affect Your Vehicle
By: Brenda

Most car owners pay special attention to their vehicles during the harsh winter months. Keeping gas tanks filled and tires in working order are a huge priority for all motorists during the coldest times of year. When the summer time comes it is easy to rejoice, enjoy the sunshine, and completely forget about car maintenance. Many people only check on their car during the summer when they need it to make an extra long trip or they begin thinking about selling it if there is a sellers market. It is important that we remember to take care of our cars in the summer months in order to get the most out of our vehicle and to avoid having to perform last minute winter maintenance.

A cars engine is always affected by extreme changes in temperature. Excessive heat can affect your cars engine the same way that extreme cold can affect it. Sitting in highway traffic on a hot summer day can be just as bad for your car as being buried under a foot of snow in your driveway. Especially with the air conditioner running nonstop inside of the car.

In order to avoid being caught up in the lure of the summer which will make you forget to properly maintain your car you should establish a year round maintenance schedule and stick to it. Sticking to a schedule can seem like a pain at first but most people find it preferable to spending thousands of dollars in car repairs that could have been easily avoided. When getting started with your yearly schedule make a list of things that must be done in order to maintain your car so that you do not forget anything. If you own a newer car the manufacture will often provide you with a maintenance schedule that will help get you going in the right direction.

Have your battery checked at least once a year to make sure none of the cables are corroding and that it is properly charged. This will help avoid stalling and other battery related issues. Also have your vehicles cooling and heating system checked often. Once or twice a year is recommended to make sure that you have temperature protection in the summer as well as the winter.

Change your oil and air filter every 3,000 miles. Since most people are used to having their oil changed it is easiest to have the air filter changed at the same time Always make sure that you carry an extra quart of oil with you just in case your car begins burning oil at an alarming rate. When getting oil changes at auto repair shops take advantage of their additional services to have other fluids checked and your car tire pressure checked.

Unlike the air filters your tire pressure should be checked more often than each 3,000 miles. Make sure that you check your tire pressure each month in the summer and the winter. Also check your break pads whenever you notice squealing or other noises because keeping pads replaced will keep you from spending more money to replace rotors.
