Driving Safely
By: Brenda

Driving safely is the primary concern of all drivers especially when they are driving at night. Even though there are much fewer cars on the road at night than during the day the majority of all fatal car accidents occur at night. This is primarily because or ability to see the road and react quickly is seriously impaired by the lack of visibility. Darkness, especially darkness that is not relieved by street lamps or other lighting, can drastically affect a driver’s ability to deal with normal driving conditions. Since even the most experienced driver is more vulnerable to unexpected road situations at night or in low visibility it is important that we should be on our guard and use common sense when driving at night. A little bit of caution and alternateness can protect us and our fellow drivers from potentially fatal accidents.

When driving at night is extremely important that we realize that we are totally dependent on available artificial sources of light. These lights are the only way we can se where we are going. Things that are clearly visible during the daylight hours, other vehicles, pedestrians, signs, are all much more difficult to see and react to at night. In order to help counteract this impairment we must be more reliant on our cars headlights, mirrors, and windows to help see. It is important that car mirrors and windows remain clean and scratch free. Also make sure that your windows are not clouded by steam, frost, or anything else that can further reduce your visibility.

If you find your visibility disrupted by steam, fog, or water it is important to get rid of the disruption as soon as possible. Do not continue driving if you cannot see for certain where you are going. Never hesitate to pull off of the road until you can see again even if you feel you are close to your home or exit. If you find that your car is suddenly fogging up pulling over to the side of the road and sitting for a minute until your defroster starts working properly will do much more harm than good. Always make sure that you have a window cleaner or rag in your car too to clean dirt off of your windshield or other windows if your windshield wipers suddenly stop working or you are out of windshield wiper fluid and suddenly find some sort of mess on your windshield.

Do not be afraid to drive at or below the speed limit when you are driving in the dark. Too often people attempt to speed in order to keep up with the flow of traffic even though they can not see. Speeding when you are unsure of your surroundings will limit your ability to properly react to unexpected changes in traffic, weather, or anything else. Take your time to make sure you get where you need to go in one, safe, piece.

Last, but not least, if you notice that you are having many problems and almost accidents while driving at night do your best to stop driving after dark. If you find yourself needing to run to the store at night try to get a ride from a friend or family member. Failing that simply wait until the next day if it is at all possible. Many drivers suffer from night blindness that makes it next to impossible for them to see anything but the glare of oncoming headlights when driving at night. Staying off the road if you are unsure of your evening driving skills is the best way to avoid accidents.
