Dowry system in India

Dowry system in India

No body knows who had introduced this dowry system in Indi and in spite of all our efforts, even efforts on the part of the state, could not write off this syste. Because of this system, the woman could not get equality in the society and even today she has to supplement his status through dowry and if dowry is on lower side, she would not be allowed equality or a honourable place in the house of her in laws.

We have noted that girls who are not bring adequate dowry are often compelled to bring more dowry, may face hardship to such an extent that they may commit suicide or there could be occasions when she is burnt alive or killed. The state which is guardian of all and custodian of all could not save the girl child and that is the reason, now people have started killing the girl child before its birth.

If the state is not in a position to write off this dowry system from this country, we should give this dowry another name. We should call this dowry as share of the girl in properties of the parents and those shares should be separated at the time of the marriage of the girl and those should be written in her name and none even from the house of her in laws should have any right over those shares. This condition should continue for the first ten years of married life and after then the woman should be allowed to merge this sharewith the properties of the husband. The state must remain guardian of these share and none should be allowed to misutilize these shares.

The present system is so dangerous that all the dowry items are immediately taken over by the people in the house of her in laws and are misutilized and nothing is left out for her when she wants to separate from the joint family. Even her husband takes the side of his parents and she is not able to utilize these dowry items and other assets as per her own wishes and desires. Therefore, the state must come with such a legislation so that the condition of woman could be eased.
