Almost anyone you ask will say they are concerned with their diet. So why do so many people make such poor nutritional choices? Improper diet can lead to a variety of problems, and eventually lead to obesity, heart problems, joint and arthritis problems, and overall bad health. There are many things that you can do to slowly improve the way that you eat and the foods that are a part of your everyday diet. By starting to make small changes you will find that it is easier to accept the change. If you decide that you are going to take drastic measures to improve your daily diet you find that you revert back to your earlier eating habits when the cravings start to happen. First, start buying more fresh fruits and vegetables. Bananas and oranges are the highest in vitamin content, so you may want to start with them. Vegetables should be dark colored. It is much healthier to make a salad with spinach or romaine than head lettuce. If you increase your intake a little bit each day, before you know it you'll be consuming recommended quantities of these healthy fresh and delicious foods. When it comes to your grain and bread products it is important to make healthy choices and steer away from the white bread and other refined flours. White bread will give you no amount of nutrition, unlike whole grain breads that are a great source of fiber and other vitamins and minerals. It will be easy to add a whole bran cereal to your morning routine and you’ll soon find yourself enjoying the taste of whole grains. Red meats contain a lot more fat than chicken and other poultry as well as fish. Eating too much fat, both animal and other types, is not a healthy habit. Besides limiting red meat, cook with healthier oils like virgin olive or canola. Instead of frying your food, try poaching fish and poultry, and eliminate even more fat from your diet. Try not to eat (or at least reduce consumption) donuts, potato chips and other fried processed foods and snacks. Popcorn is a great snack if you don't soak it in butter. Rice cakes are another good choice. Try to trick you sweet tooth with substitutes for cookies and cakes - options such as such as dried fruit, low fat cookies, low fat ice cream, or low fat candies. Making changes to the way you eat can be a life long process, with a little bit of patience and determination you can dramatically change your life. Not only will you feel more healthy and vibrant, but you may be surprised by how the tastes of foods change for the better!
