Crafting Web Copy that Works
By: Vlad Ehrsam

Eventually, an Internet company will suffer from low rankings. The cause may be unknown, but the solution is. With a little work, websites can easily improve rankings. By understading how search engines operate, and by using the right keywords, you can drive targeted traffic to your site.

To keep with the times, businesses need a web copy writer on board that is highly experienced in SEO (Search Engine Optimized) keywords. If you're creative enough, you can take a stab at it yourself. Use caution though, you want the content to be rich in keywords but not overpowering.

Some tips to remember are:

Forget everything you learned about writing, to put yourself in the right frame of mind. The web copy you write should be in a conversational tone. That means 'fragments' and sentences that end with 'prepositions' are ok.

Try using a font that is easy on the eyes. Webmasters tend to prefer Times New Roman, Verdana, or Arial. Also, the content should flow.

Search Engine Optimization Friendly

A good thing to remember when writing SEO copy is that it is better to use less to say more. Many surfers merely scan the content for important points so there is no need for long paragraphs. Leave out any language that makes you sound like an intellectual and just use the basic commands of the English Language.

Headers: 6-8 words only Sentence length: 15-20 words on average Paragraph length: no fewer than 3 sentences, 5 maximum Word Count: approximately 350

The keyword madness appears little more than a cruel joke at times. What exactly are keywords and who uses them anyway? What search engine should I employ?

Google or Yahoo (search engines) use the text (keyword/ keyword phrase) typed in the search box to locate websites. For instance, if you're looking for a maid, you would type the words "maid service", "maid", or "housecleaner" in the search engine. The search engine then finds all of the websites associated with that word. Keyword positioning on your web page will determine how fast the search engines locate your site.

Prior to starting, you want to list all of the words that could possibly be associated with the goods or services sole on your website. These words need to be realistic. A bona fide web copy writer can weave these words in and out of the content so that the copy reads well and is informative at the same time.

Your focus is your home page. Headers should consist of no more than 8 words and no less than 6. Strategically place your keywords within the headline. This will increase your odds.

Remember that the home page is like a sales letter so be sure that it is simple to read and still concise. Talking like you would to a friend, introduce the reader to your business. Remember to also embed the content with your keywords so that the copy flows.

Mistakes to Avoid

It takes a lot of time and practice to craft seo friendly web copy. Many writers will start writing seo articles without a clear understanding of the nature of keywords and how they are used by search engines. It is common for beginners to concentrate too much on the keywords and they wind up with unreadable copy that ultimately drives surfers away.

To sell your product or service you must write about the benefits and not about the features. People want to know what they will gain from using your product or service. Dedicate the content to focusing on "What's in it for them."

Always remember to edit your copy because things like grammatical or spelling errors make you seem unprofessional. It is a good idea to have someone else look over your work.

Web pages are little more than a connected chain of information. Every page prods visitors into probing deeper into your site with the ultimate goal being to convince them to buy from you. If the search engines are not directing people to your site, you will never have a chance to tell people about your great company and what it has to offer them.
