Bad breath saved my life
By: Dynamic Blue Link

I can safely say, I am a 40-something year-old woman that can be proud of my looks. A decade ago, I was a sociable young gal deeply attentive to the fact that I caused men to turn and look as I walked. I never had trouble attracting companions. I did have a problem warding off green-eyed girlfriends. And even today, 20 years later, I still manage to draw men‘s interest.

But in these last 10 years, it is not the same. I have been haunted by a enormous stretch of bad breath. This is something that has limited me enormously in every way. Because I was acutely aware of the problem, I felt my confidence fall downwards. All my life, I have been devoted to first class oral hygiene, but the bad breath would simply not give me peace. In fact, it seemed to get stronger over time.

eager to heal this trouble, I tried everything. Different toothpastes and mouth washes. I changed my toothbrush every month. I couldnít care less if I lost keys and money, but would never leave home without my mini toothbrush and dental floss. I even chewed on parsley each morning for a time because I was told it was an ancient cure. But no. Nothing seemed to help.

With no Medicare or any other health insurance, I was my options were limited. Finally, I gathered all my coins to pay a visit to my dentist. I was diagnosed with gum disease. In fact, my gums are swollen and bleed frequently, which has influenced the care of my teeth, which are weak, yellow and some are even moving. I am clearly heading towards loosing some teeth. There didn‘t seem to be a cause for this as it was clear my oral hygiene practices were indeed perfect. So I was sent for a head scan. My dentist knew there was an underlying problem there that had to be diagnosed.

The scan diagnosed the problem was much more serious than basic gum disease. It showed an odd layer that reached from my nasal cavity right down to my bronchus. Confused, my dentist sent me off for a battery of tests. With the results back, I was immediately recommended to a specialist.

The diagnosis was terrifying. The cause of my bad breath was nose drops. A full check-up showed that halitosis was the least of my difficulty. And it all made sense to me then.

About 10 years ago, I recall being affected by a cold. Nothing special. It was a cold. A simple cold. I took the regular treatment from the pharmacy - an aspirin for the headache, drops for the nose, lots of lemon tea and a few hot baths.

But I remember it did take forever to go away. So, I headed for the pharmacy to get something stronger, and was urged to continue with the nose drops to help me breathe better at night.

I didn‘t see, at the time, just how long ago that was. All the cold symptoms disappeared, except the blocked nose. I continued with the nose drops, because I couldn‘t breathe without their use.

That was 10 years ago. For 10 years, I have been addicted to nose drops. I never sought medical aid to cure my addiction because I never distinguished this as an addiction. Nose drops! Who would have seen it was so negative?

All this time, I never supposed so much trouble would come of this. But I now see the reason for my heavy head, bags under my eyes and a heavy chest. My throat is commonly filled with mucous, and my lungs canít seem to take in all the air I need. Even climbing a set of stairs has become a challenge for me. My cardiovascular system has also been affected. Heart failure, also known as congestive heart failure, where the heart cannot pump enough oxygenated blood to match the needs of the body‘s other organs. A heart attack, or myocardial infarction, is also a potential threat.

So, now I am setting up for surgery. Four surgeries, to be honest. With a calculated healing time of 6-9 months. It will feature a special exercise program of body building, designed to strengthen my damaged muscles and tendons.

I am paying a heavy price for my naivety. Had it not been for halitosis, I could have paid a heavier one. Bad breath may seem a simple fiend that haunts you for not brushing your teeth, but it may well be the snitching sign that something much more dangerous is putting you at risk. At the end of the day, bad breath saved my life.

And to imagine that all this was brought on by a simple bout of influenza that was not cured as it should.
