Advantages of Divorce
By: James Walsh

The desire to get married can be a very strong driving force in the life of an individual. The romance and intimacy associated with it can be the source of several daydreams and sleepless nights. This is not without reason, after all marriage brings that one person into picture with whom one can share all the ups and downs of life.

Marriage Turns Sour

Unfortunately for some people, marriage may not translate into the heaven that they had envisaged. It may turn out to be an entirely different cup of tea from what one anticipates or desires it to be. In such situations people have to tread cautiously, least they rock the boat of their married life.

One has to accept the reality that the dreams of yester year have not fructified into the facts of today. If this coming to terms with situation at hand is not done, then marriage can become a load on the everyday life of a person. It may turn a beautiful relationship into a living hell and leave little, if any at all, scope for compromise. This can lead to a situation where divorce is the only option left for a healthy continuation of the person’s lifestyle.

Divorce

A divorce is the farthest thing from the minds of the newly wed bride and bridegroom. All the gaiety and festivities that mark marriage more than mask any possible reason for possible future skirmishes. No one steps into matrimony thinking that it might eventually lead to divorce one day.

Nevertheless life can have its own strange ways. It may not take long for the dreams of a happy married life to turn sour. Or else it may be several years before one decides to turn his or her back at the partner. Irrespective of the time it takes or the reasons thereof, a divorce can be a truly painful experience for an individual. In some cases though, divorce may actually turn out to be a boon and a catalyst for personal growth.

Advantages of Divorce

There can be numerous advantages of taking a divorce if one is entrapped in an unsuitable marriage. One has to remember that marriage by itself is not a panacea for all ills. It takes both time and effort to make a marriage work. If either one or both the partners lack the sufficient amount of interest in making the marriage work then it is bound to fall apart.

Taking a divorce can actually be a liberating action in some instances.

A Physically Abusive Relationship: If the marriage has one partner with overwhelming tendencies to turn to physical abuse of the other then it can be a traumatic experience for the suffering individual. The only answer to this problem is that the abusive partner amends his or her ways. If this is not done then a divorce may be the only option to liberate the suffering partner from the pain that marriage has turned out to be.

An Emotionally Abusive Relationship: An abuse need not be just physical. The physical abuse can leave scars on both the person and the psyche of an individual. Nevertheless the consequences of an emotional abuse can be even worse. This is because there are no visible scars and the abused partner may be deprived of the basic support and sympathy, sought or required by him or her, from family and friends who may not find any visible fault with the abusive partner.

Over Possessiveness: It is possible for either one of the two partners to be over possessive of the other. It may look harmless or even lovingly adorable as a trait in the initial stages. However with the progression of time the same traits may start to suffocate the other partner. It may stunt the personal growth and hamper immensely with the personality of the spouse who is at a receiving end. In such a scenario too, divorce can be liberation for the person concerned.

Addiction: It is an open secret that an addict can make life difficult for those around him or her. If one of the two partners turns to substance abuse and is unable to come out of it then he or she will not just be playing with his or her life but also with the life of the partner and other family members. Such people are known to turn physically abusive also. When faced with the extremes of such a situation, a person may be left with no choice but to head for divorce.
